Hey guys just trying to give my AFM a clean!

The thread on the screws are the star ones but they have a thing in the middle that doesnt let you get a torque driver in there

Is there anyway to get the AFM out with out taking out the pipe that its connected to?

Btw its a MY00

Any info would be great!

I've just changed mine on a MY00 and its very easy. I've got a pod filter so for me it was easier to just take the pod and pipe off then unscrew the AFM. With that said though, the AFM can certainly be removed without taking the inlet pipe off. Just follow these steps:

1. Unplug the AFM electrical connector
2. Using a TORX allen key, remove the two large TORX screws, from memory theres one on the top and one on the bottom, and these attach the AFM to the metal insert. The two smaller TORX screws attach the metal insert to the inlet pipe and these do not need to be removed.
3. The AFM is now free to be removed. It has a unique rubber seal and may take a bit of levering to slide out.

Thats all there is to it. As I said earlier, I removed the inlet pipe for both convenience and as it was my first time playing around with the AFM, I didnt want to damage it. However it is certainly possible to remove it, just use the steps above and as mentioned a degree of leverage will be required.

I found this problem the other week.
The problem being that you need a torx key with a hole down the centre of it, because they have put a bit of metal in the middle of the screw so you cannot put a normal torx key in.
What I did was got a punch and knocked that little metal piece out, then my torx key worked.

Just found out you can get a set of 40 torx keys for $15 from dick smith and they have the one that fits with the thing in the middle so going to get a set!

I bought the whole set of different "security" bits & driver, cost me around $60 from Bunnings for Kinchrome brand a few months back... already used it in 3 different applications requiring "security" screw removal (including the AFM on my '99).

Great to have when ya need 'em...

Once you get those poxy screws out throw them in the bin and fit some standard ones. Rinse the AFM with alcohol/metho and wipe visible surfaces with small cotton bud and dry thoroughly. Allow an hour or so to dry before reinstalling. Discussed the reliability of the AFM before and seems the 99/00 units may be susceptible to vibration. If you fit a pod make sure its well secured.

I thought all you have to do is spray it with contact cleaner?

isopropyl alcohol is the go...failing that give it squirt of contact cleaner. Ever since they banned freon its been hell
