You can get AFR autometer gauges which is what ill hope to purchase soon.

You can tell if you engine is leaning out by noticing abnormal amounts of power that your car doesnt usually possess. Also "pinging" noises are a usual indicator that you are allowing more air then fuel in your Air/Fuel Ratio.

Thumbs down

Ahhh the good old AFM's on the 99/00 WRX's.

The problem with ALL the above questions and diagnosis is that no-one ever tells us what Model WRX they have NOR a full list of bloody mods. Are we supposed to be mind readers and make educated guesses. ?

Its like trying to instruct eye surgery over the phone with the surgeon using a magnifying glass and a hot needle and speaking with a mouth full of marbles!!!

So in future please:
Model / Year of WRX ?
Total KM and time of last service and what was done ?
Engine Type (Ej205/207/257)
Intake Exhaust Mods ?

Thats not hard is it ?

Steps of soapbox.....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for all those having problems like those described above, particularily if you have a 99/00 WRX/STi and run an oiled type filter. The usual suspect on these models if a dirty / stuffed AFM. They are fragile bloody things. Yes they can be cleaned to get a little bit more life out of them, but if the AFM has not been changed since the car was new DO IT NOW ($180ish) before your AFR leans out and its replacement bottom end time...

Better still get a Power FC with a Nissan AFM.
Or better still get a 2nd hand Possumlink V5 ECU or Autronic SMC that is tuned via MAP and piss the factory AFM off all together.

Just a quick one, i have a slight (read very slight) misfire at idle...its not afm coz i bought a new one 1000km ago, most probably spark plugs or the leads.

plugs been changed 25k km ago by the previous owner and im waiting for my 100k service to do them, the revs dont flactuate just the odd misfire every 5-10 seconds or so

Just a bump on this one, question for the gurus:

Since then I had my spark plugs + leads exchanged (platinum + genuine leads), tried a different coil pack with the same results = missfire. What else could it be?? The car is stock pretty much other than the 3"TBE, 90k kms on the clock. Stock BOV...im sure i checked every single vacuum hose at least twice and havent found a crack, any other ideas?

EDIT: Before anyone posts it, AFM was exchanged 1k kms ago (didnt reset the ecu but i dont think they'd have caused the problem), also cleaned the idle control valve (but that shouldnt matter with missfire)

If you're going to do all this, might as well consider replacing the fuel reg line too, once they get old and tired they sometimes slip off with boost.

Coupla bucks of silicone hose and some hose clamps to keep it snug is cheap insurance too.
