Default Suggestions for TBE for MY03 WRX

Hello helpful fellow WRX drivers

Well, the modding is slowly beginning, and the gathering of parts has begun. On the shopping list I have a TBE, though I'm a bit in the dark about the benefits of one TBE versus another. I was hoping to hear a bit from you guys about what your experiences have been, and any lessons you've learned along the way.

What I'm looking to get overall from the power side of these mods is a very streetable set-up, with a focus on being quick (i.e. good low-down torque, minimal lag, quick off the line), rather than fast (i.e. I don't feel like I need to break any dyno records or push for low-12s).

Specifically from a TBE, the usual specs apply (304 stainless, mandrel bent, 3" diameter throughout for the most part), and I'm looking for a good quality system with a nice "sporty" note but one that is more on the subdued-sounding side, without any droning. Twin outlets (looking like stock) would be good too. It looks like a dump pipe with a splitter built into it would be a go as well (I plan on sticking with the TD04 BTW).

I've seen RMS offer their own system for $1750, "drive in / drive out". I guess maybe that's my reference point here?

This car is my daily driver and I plan on keeping her for as long as I can, so again - the focus is on quality here, and a bit on practicality too (no cannon mufflers, please!).

So.... any thoughts?

Thanks everyone!

Nik

Hey mate,

I was looking at RMS, and was initially going to take it there, and then to Speedworks. No offence to people out there who get exhausts off Ebay and the like, but i don't think the quality is there, and if it is, it's very rare.

I have recently had a TBE fitted, full 3" all the way, mandrel bent, stainless steel and it's oh so sweet. Cost me $2200 fully fitted, but glad i spent a bit extra to get a quality system.

This is what it looks like, before/after. I have contact details for this bloke. He'll get the exhaust made up for you (custom made) and he'll fit it himself in a day.

Damn happy with it and sounds the shiznit!~

I have one of the China spec Ebay TBE systems. Gotta say, that I am very very happy with it. Just because it was cheap. Does not mean its a bad system. It sound good, does not drone. Fits up perfectly and all for $650!

Honestly, seeing as you have no intention of changing the td04 out for something bigger. I would recommend one of the china spec systems. Just change over the muffle later to a twin tip unit and your done.

However if you do change your mind and later want to chase some serious numbers. A Split dump pipe that has a separate pipe for the wastegate would be benficial. This can always be added on later.

Butler Built systems are probably your best bet. They are just as good, if not better quality, than some of the Jap systems available.

Super high quality, and you can get a quieter muffler i.e. non-cannon, as well as a resonator to keep the noise down.

RMS and MMS fit these systems.

Nik,

You want quality AND proven performance then follow this.......

http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/index...howtopic=58831

Do look at Michael South's Exhaust webpage.

http://www.msengineering.com.au/exhaustsystems.html

Pay particular attention to the splitter in the dump pipe.
Also a 2.5" diff back will give you surprising performance gains too. The design of this diff back is very important.

RMS/MMS can do the splitter if you want to go quality local stuff.

I'll second that...
