Road Safety Idea
How many people die when there car hits a tree?
The greenies may hate me for this and there is a bit of work involved, but I'm sure it would significently reduce road deaths. You have a country road. What you need to do is; 1) Clear all trees within, say, 50m of the road edge. 2) Rehab it with sand if it's not sandy to start with. 3) Woodchip the trees you knocked down and spread this liberally over the sand. 4) Plant thick shrubbs in this area being careful in selection to choose shrubs that will not get "solid" enough to do real damage to a car (read death) but are thick enough (have about a row every 5ms, so 10 rows) to slow a car before ploughing through the 50m or so of sand with woodchips and shrubs... This would take some time and require a lot of work but I honestly think no-one would die if they ran off the road, swerved and lost control, weaved out the way of an asleep truckie.... Food for thought....Economics or Lives??

Good luck getting ever land owner willing to give up 25 - 50m of land
But yeah it would be brilliant if you could execute it..... in areas that it could work in of course.

brilliant idea but definately an issue with time, land owners and big $$$.
then you have to look at the percentage of deaths on country roads only involving hitting trees only, not other cars- roll overs.. things like that. compared to all other deaths would it be worth while??? definately would be fantastic tho. make mofo's really work for the doll hey???

Great idea!! Logistics of it are the problem. And because the government will not make any coin from it, they wouldnt do it.

Most of the time country highways have a portion of land 20m either side of the existing road edge. This is called a "road widening" I know this because i am in planning and deal with it every day. Most of the time, unfortunatley Pete, the councils require that when designing the road, that tree's be planted along the side's to "replace" the tree's that were cut down to make the road. Also they provide a screen for people who own the property off the road, so they can't see the road and also blocks noise from heavy trucks and the like. They actually tell us (as planners) what sort of tree's they want, and that we can buy them from their supplier. If we (as planners) do not meet these requirements, then road's don't get built. Simple.
Good idea... but its never gonna happen ... not while people are thinking about Global Warming and the like... |

Great idea Pete!
Perhaps an easier solution would be: 1. Make all the major highways where "city folk crash" into dual lane the whole way. i.e. remove having to go into oncoming traffic to overtake. This also removes the frustration of the losers who sit at 80kmh in the single lane, then 130kmh at the overtaking lanes... 2. Have a line of trees or a break in between the traffic. Similar to sections of road when heading to Bunbury. This eliminates night time glare of oncoming traffic, also stops oncoming traffic crashing into you or vice versa. 3. Realistic highway speed limits? Honestly in 99% of cars 110kmh is the speed you want to travel at, not the maximum you should be able to travel at. Perhaps 130kmh would be better - Allows people to travel at a comfortable speed of 110-120kmh + room to speed up for overtaking. There are some really simple ideas that could drastically reduce country accidents, but they don't seem to happen.
