I appreciate what your saying Teej, but I wouldn't have suggested it if it was a waste of time! Aside from a few psychos who take a little longer to 'get the message' in which case you may need to be patient and follow the process through and let them become arrested a couple of times etc, statistically most parties back down upon being served with the initial order.
If the situation gets 'worse' initially, you'll find it does get better so long as you follow the correct procedure, communicate with the police with every matter and stay on the right side of the lines.

PS- Pays to remember that something as simple as the other party making a phone call after being served breaches their order.
