Default What to get as a work hack??

Hi guys,
I need to get a new work car pretty quick. Been trauling the Gov auctions and I have my eye on either a 05' BA Falcon MK II one tonner or an 04' VY 3.8l series II ute. The ford will probably go for $2 - $3K less as it has nearly 90k's on it vs 45K for the commo. I'd preffere a trayback but its not a huge issue. What do you guys think would be the better way to go as it will get a lot of K's on it and I want to convert it to gas aswell. Those of you who have these or similar some feedback would be great. Any pros/cons on either car?

Cheers

Ford will carry more load. Holden wouldn't get near a tonne.

ive got a 05 BA tradesman. its done 150,000kms in 2 years. most of those kms is been towing bout 1.7 tonne worth of machinery. i fucked the gearbox last year, i lost 2nd (its auto). also broken alot of little shitty plastic things inside the cab: boot release fell apart when i kicked it with my work boot, hazard light switch broke ect...

16L/100kms mainly towing load. about 500kms to a tank. about $90 to fill up

its been completely thrashed but it still runs..

Go the Holden.

You'll thank yourself if you ever need to repair it, because spare parts are about half the price of the Ford spare parts.

Ask me how I know, we own a BA Fairmont and a VY SS ute.

As for Holden not hauling as much as the Ford, we had 500kg of rocks in the back of the VY SS ute, and that has the lower capacity sports suspension compared to the lower spec models. Did it with no troubles.

I'd say the Ford 1 tonner trayback would have more towing capacity than a Holden wellbody ute because of the leaf springs, but a Holden 1 tonner trayback will carry a ton also.

All true ^^^ just he said it was between a Ford 1 tonner and a holden ute (presuming not 1 tonne capacity). Just saying it won't get near a tonne. Yep maybe 500-600-700. Just not 1000+ without something going horribly wrong. Not to mention insurance would be out the window.

Yeah I've had a chat to a couple of my mechanic mates with similar responses. The more I weigh it up I might just hold off a bit longer and look harder for a commo one tonner as it will carry 700kg+ form time to time. BA's can apparently have diff and gearbox issues under continuous load like that...

Does it have to be Ford or Holden?

We have a selection of utes at work (ford, ss crewman, navara, landcruiser, some light truck thing) and the landy is hands down the best. Its got the most kms on it and its the oldest but its been bullet proof!

I have had a couple of 4WD's (Hilux and Patrol) and have found them to be relitivley expensive to run compared to any 2 x 4. Not out of the question but weighing my options up.
