I am bail surety for somebody at the moment. Bail was fuckall ($10k), however you don't have to part with the money then and there on the spot. Although I'm not sure how this shit works in other countries. One thing you have to watch out for is your assets vs liabilities. Obviously if your liabilities exceed your assets, then it's safe to say your pretty much fucked.

It's only when and IF the accused legs it and fucks off (or fails to adhere to any other bail conditions), that they actually require you to pay up.
