I've been using Linux as my primary desktop for about 5 years. First Debian and in the last couple of years Ubuntu. All my servers are Debian.... Well ok my router is FreeBSD :P

I've got Beryl installed and it is cool to show off to people (Has even more fancy effects than Vista or Mac OS X) but for day to day use I tend to just switch it all off - I only have a 128MB 6600GT graphics card and it tends to run out of memory rendering the effects and gives me blank windows - a bug there is no fix for! Guess it doesn't help running 1920x1200 with 20 windows open haha.

Beryl is very simple to install on Ubuntu, give it a shot!

USed to run gentoo on my laptop. But took a long time to get running. Had to write my own power management scripts my own hot key scripts etc. This was a few years ago. Then it died so run ubuntu on it due to not wanting to spend weeks setting up. Died because I accidently deleted some files. Tried to recovery my files. And rooted the reiser partition to no return. HAH

I think the new gentoo install is easier. But you cant go wrong with gentoo you compile everything optimised for you processor and only what you need.

Gives you a very lean and fast system.
