VW Golf GT Super & Turbo Charged

My wife and I are thinking of buying one of the new Golf GT's. She thought she wanted just a golf until we drove the GT. What do you guys think of a supercharged/turbocharged 1.4 ltr petrol car?

Good concept, need to be careful you dont spill your drink when you're driving it though :)

liberty_b4 12-07-2007 09:12 AM

mate thats frikkin awes!! my old man is after a sporty little hatch so i think i may be persuading him to buy the GT, amazing power figures at only 1250 rpm :)
i love it, relatively cheap too at only $35k~

yep it goes pretty hard down low but it wouldn't be chopping anyone p-diddy crew. The price is right and the finish is pretty damn good imo.

stinga 12-07-2007 09:21 AM

u farken tightarse Dave, just buy her the R32 and be done with. :thefinger

jEstEr? 12-07-2007 09:24 AM

I fail to see how its the worlds first Turbo/Super Charged injected motor when Nissan were making the twincharged March in the late 80s? not to mention the GrpB Lancia Delta S4

Either way, the moar manufactureres that boost cars the happier i become :)

they had a blue two door R32 that I had a look at, nice car but not for the dollars. No turbo just V6 ;)

stinga 12-07-2007 09:46 AM

do r32 com in turbo and non turbo versions?

American Dave 12-07-2007 09:52 AM
do r32 com in turbo and non turbo versions?
nope but I would def buy the r32 if it came in turbo form, 184 Kw normal aspirated V6 only on offer.

jEstEr? 12-07-2007 11:37 AM

i drove my mates '95 Golf VR6 just the other night, i was amazed at how fun it was. 2.8L V6 FWD in a little hatch. It handled suprisingly well

Try and get a second hand newish Golf GTI if there are any around.

Bigger, better all round hatch for the same wad of cash.

they use the same golf platform so no difference ins size. Her best friend has the GTI and we have driven it to. Just costs a heap more but my wife is not that keen on spending more the $40K as she only drives on the weekends anyway.

Bakks 12-07-2007 12:02 PM

I've heard of people getting the GTi for 37k on road, which isn't too much more than the GT.

Heard many good things about the GTi, but all the reviews I've read re the GT say its a pointless car, you'd be foolish not to spend the extra and get the GTi. Jeremy Clarkson rated it as one of the worst 5 cars of all time due to the above.

I'd love a GTi! Especially with the new WRX looking as it does.

BAS 12-07-2007 12:23 PM

I nearly bought one of those R32's instead of the evo- the VW's are light years ahead with their interior fit and finish compared to the evo/wrx's. That was until i drove one back to back with the evo...

I'm looking for a second hand GTI for the missus, but there aren't any around. That GT looks a nice car, especially compared to the 2.0 FSI for a couple grand more.

There are bugger all GTI's on second hand market because they are newish model to Australia and very well built.

Bakks 12-07-2007 01:45 PM

Shit hey, pricier than I thought. Don't see that many GT's out there, may be something to consider resalewise?

GT's only got released a month ago here in Perth!

slappy 12-07-2007 02:00 PM

I like the GT, I would buy one in the future. Sure they are not as fast as a GTi. They are in the prius class of street racing (drive it as hard as you want and no-one will notice). Fuel ecomomy is decent and I bet the induction noise will sound good with a pod filter.

For some reason when I see dudes driving around in GTi's they seem to look like knobs, but if they are in a normal golf they dont?

for the record I won't be driving either one, but both are a much safer car for my wife than her current MY2002 MGF rag top.

true but doubt my missus has any plans to slam and change the camber of her new car anyway! She would not know what a body kit is and phat wheels don't do it for her.

waxdass 12-07-2007 03:06 PM

those rims are an option from audi, as with the s-line suspension package. Not bad for a stock car eh. But yes out of your price range it seems.

get the GT, plenty of 2nd hand GTis in carsales tho...

only GTI's on car sales are 5-6 years old and of no interest to us. Try finding a 2005/06 GTI and you will struggle ?

waxdass 12-07-2007 03:14 PM

yeh unless u can get me a new s4 or rs4 half price....... haha

dave... the new 08 a3 and a4s are gona be released soon mayb wait ?
whole different chassis etc

Bakks 12-07-2007 03:22 PM

I reckon those rims and that ride height would look just as good on a Golf....

yeh I know but she needs a new car soon and has to move on the GT as they are only releasing 430 of them in Australia this year! If she waits and then doesn't like the new audi then we are screwed and I can't have her complaining about her car, especially when it might mean she wants to drive mine

slappy 12-07-2007 03:52 PM

I like the GT, and who knows, a pulley kit and boost controller might help kill some of that economy!

vyper 12-07-2007 04:58 PM

TDI mate, go a diesel.

AIG 12-07-2007 06:50 PM

I tried to find a second hand current shape GTI but theres none around. Ended up buying a new 3dr. $38490 before on roads. Only option you really need is the metallic paint if you dont want white.
Great road car with awesome interior and quality. Plenty of torque too.
Wouldnt have bought one if we didnt have a rex as well tho. Had it on the skidpan on sunday and it was a lot of fun but not as good as a rex.

Theres an article in Motor magazine comparing the GT and a 3 door GTI.

BALISTC 12-07-2007 07:29 PM
TDI mate, go a diesel.
Fuck yer.

Article on Autospeed about a TDi Golf with just an Oettinger ECU reflash....380nm of torque at bugger all RPM, they claim its as quick as a stock WRX.

My uncles Audi A6 3.0 TDi has 450nm of torque at 1400rpm, its barrels of fun to drive :D

Noticed that article, the GT didn't exhibit significantly better fuel economy, while being noticeably slower than the GTi. Although the disclaimer was that the GTi had several thousand k's under it's belt while the GT was not even run in.

Motor has another article featuring the GTi / MPS 3 / CTR this month.
And a quite favourable article on the new Impreza S-GT (WRX)

So I guess you would have to pay full retail on the Golf GT?

Just curious cause curiousity got the better of me and I went and had a squiz at the Civic Type R

Honda are not offering any deals on the CTR, $45,100 take it or leave it. cause the demand is apparently high, with 1200 cars for Oz this year.

They implied that the 'specification may change' next year.

I took this to mean that they are considering dumping the, no Brembos, no LSD, 18kw less powerful, English Built hatch and replacing it with the cheaper, faster, better specced (but less trendy) Japanese built sedan.

:D

motor mag didnt seem all to rapped with the ctr, but they never seem to have anything but praises for VW's.

the read in the last issue it think about the 3dr gti and the gt was very interesting though. i wouldnt have a clue of the price diffy though. but from what they had said about the diff with power and economy the gti wins hands down for the extra dollars. but as someone said earlier. it hadnt been run in yet. so i guess that could make a diff. also having a twin boost setup the ways to tune the gt would be endless and come a few months down the track once the car has been run in etc, they could actually be a reallllly good base for a cheapish hot hatch.

IMO i think either car would be awsome dave, but if the money says no just go with the GT.
