I own a floorcoverings store and while its not a huge part of my business on the odd occasion sell artificial turf to customers for their backyards, around pools etc but mostly to indoor rec centres.

Personally I hate the stuff and would never have it. However it is very easy to maintain and will almost never wear out.

If you buy one with too much length in the pile it will flatten badly in trafficed areas after a very short period of time and will look terrible. The shorter and denser the pile the better as it will continue to have a more uniform look even after heavy wear.

To install it properly it cannot be laid on raw earth. It needs a MDF/HDF or similar or concrete base. If not chances are it will never stay flat and will bubble up and move a lot.

You also need special adhesives which come in 4L or 20L drums and its not cheap, the 20L costs me nearly $220 a drum wholesale. Coverage is 3-4 sqm per Litre.

There are huge differences in prices and quality as some are not designed foor outdoors oddly enough (Not UV stabalised).

Go Wog style - green painted concrete FTW!

If it gets dirty - hose it off.
If the dog shits on it - hose it off.
If the kids fall on it - hose the blood off.
