Just make a new playlist and transfer them all to that.

Then when your iPOD is plugged in select it in iTunes and choose to only update that playlist onto it. Can't be more precise as I don't have my iPod plugged in to see, but its pretty straight forward.

I have NFI what the ticking does on iTunes apart from non ticked items not getting played.

Youve gotta change your settings so that only ticked items are transfered.
