Police to crush car after burnout offence
May 28, 2009 04:10pm

A DRIVER will have his car crushed - in a first for WA - after being caught for the sixth time doing a burnout.

Police Minister Rob Johnson says he will crack down further on ``those stupid idiots’’ convicted of hoon driving offences - and will also go after hoons who damage their cars before they can be confiscated.

Magistrate Jeremy Packington today granted a court order allowing police to confiscate the car of Ryan James Joseph, 20, after police spotted him doing a burnout in the car park of a Myaree fast-food restaurant on January 19.

Police say Joseph had his girlfriend in the front seat and his 14-month-old son in the back while doing a large burnout.

The conviction was his sixth for hoon driving.

Mr Johnson said despite the 1995 Ford Falcon Sedan being registered in the name of Joseph’s girlfriend, he would ask for the car to be crushed.

``This is the first vehicle in Western Australia that will be crushed under our very strong anti-hoon laws,’’ he told reporters.

``The stupidity of the young driver, who is 20 years old, committed these offences in front of police who witnessed the accident.

``The offender had a 14-month-old son on the back seat of the car.

``It just shows you the irresponsible type of person that he was and I am glad that he is not only losing his vehicle but he will be losing his licence and I hope that he will be fined very heavily.’’

Mr Johnson said the car was bought recently before the offence for $4000, but when police went to seize the vehicle it had been stripped and was now worth ``about $40’’.

He said legislation would be introduced in coming months to allow police to confiscate hoon cars at the third offence with temporary bans in force for earlier convictions and punish those who damaged cars before they could be taken.

``This will send a very clear message out to those stupid idiots who are driving around on our roads in a dangerous fashion that this is how their vehicle will end up,’’ he said.

Under legislation, cars permanently seized cars can either be crushed or sold, with the proceeds going to the road trauma fund.

Mr Johnson said Joseph had told police he left the car on the side of Brookton Hwy overnight after it broken down and when he returned the next day it had been trashed.
