I would say chances are your hard disk has died, or is dieing. Laptop drives have a rough life. They get moved, dropped, shaken etc so they can just "die". You may have noticed things running a bit slower than usual, maybe odd resets occasionally.

Best bet is to try and get your data off before you stuff around with it too much. If it is dieing then each time it spins up and down or you try to get stuff off it, it dies a bit more.

If it's an IDE drive you can by IDE caddy's for like $20 from Storm computers. If its a sata drive and you have a desktop with sata connections you can easily connect it up to your desktop to get your info off. Otherwise you can also get the caddy's for SATA drives for a similar price.

Once you get your stuff off it, then look at rebuilding windows. If you have problems getting windows to install properly or get odd errors after it installs, usually means your drive is pretty much stuffed. Replacements vary from $100ish up to $400ish depending on what kind of drive and what size you want.

Hmm if it's still newish then chances are its a SATA drive. Problem is, with Toshiba or anyone for that matter, they don't care about your data. They will first try wiping your drive and re-installing the standard image for that model. If that fails then they'll just replace the drive. Either way you loose your data.

One thing to try if it's IDE is there may be a adapter on the pins of the drive. You could try pulling that off and you might find it fits your caddy.

http://regmedia.co.uk/2007/03/06/fuj...60gb_hdd_1.jpg - This is a SATA drive, you can see there's no "pins" as such.

http://www.nr-it.com/images/hdds/wdf..._VE%20copy.jpg - This is an IDE drive, as you can see there's quite a few pins.
