Default lower settings for windows Vista....

hey everyone,
ive heard that vista has special effects set on it to make it more 'interactive' and that these effects take a chunck out of your graphics card?

ive turned them off but it reminds me of my window 98 days :/
im either going to head back to xp or buy another graphics card...
any ideas?

edit: turning these settings off affects your games FPS

You need a 'decent' (read anything from the last few years) graphics card to run the aero effects. If you graphics card/computer isn't up to running the basic features of Vista, I think FPS in games is the least of your issues.

If your computer can't run the basic graphics level in Vista, why bother installing it? Like all operating systems, each new version will want more hardware - if your computer is a few years old, run the operating system from that time.

Rather than guessing, what kind of computer/graphics specs are you talking about?

I've run vista on some really old hardware without a glitch, so something seems odd if you have to run it with everything turned off?

Oh SiS... Onboard graphics of fail.

Buy a gaming video card, disable the SiS and the problems will be fixed.

you can disable the some desktop features and something else.. give me 5 mins, i wrote them down somewhere, helps a little bit

Quote:
Turn Vista Aero Off :

Right click desktop – personalize

Window color and appearance

Click windows vista basic. Then okay.

This turns off all the 3d stuff.

To turn the Security black screen screen off ( makes all the screen dark and comes up with a security box )

Start – control panel

Click classic view on right hand box

Then go to user accounts

Then at the bottom of the options click “ turn user account control on/off “

Click off, then reboot pc.

dont take a step backwards in the OS department; upgrade your graphics card instead.
I'm no expert on computers but if you want to run Vista and play gemes decent;y (ie not top-level but decently) then about $200+ will get you something ok. Depends if you're into your games. seeing as though your current setup you bought barely runs Vista, I'd say you're not too fussed.

Just found this site from somewhere. Check it out. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2194161,00.asp
