convince him not to be a fool, blowing his wad too early and he will have a real car sooner rather than wasting it all on this cheap piece of crap, which is going to be breaking all the time probably. id suggest an old toyota echo/yaris that would be cheap to run and cheap to maintain, and cheap!

Ditto. I had to wait 10 years before I got a decent car, was worth the wait. Had to drive around in sh*tboxes while I saved, meanwhile I was the butt of all my mates jokes who were cruising around in flash cars bought with the banks money.

He will be very lucky not to end up with something he is just pouring money into and it will be a harsh lesson. Get something reliable and boring like a Corolla or something similar.

best advice in this thread.

I'm with TJ, ripper drive and can easily avid the money pit situation.

Celica GT4 isnt a bad option if you must have a turbo car, but the civic is probably faster and better handling.

those who suggested hondas. care to point out a vtec for 6-7k that isnt flogged out? if you were to go down the honda path you would have to buy a crapper and do a conversion. e.g. get an eg civic for bout 3k and do a conversion which would be approx another 4k unless you diy. a sss pulsar would be a similar option, although not turbo and would most likely be high mileage. but i would agree with the guys saying save the money until you can buy something he really wants

Some good thoughts above, seems like the consensus is to go for S13 or NA Honda... looking closely at both these options.

Also considering an unmodded Supra which is just within range but I know next to nothin about 'em

Incidentally, he's a sensible driver and rigidly sticks to speed limits, won't touch a drink b4 driving etc... but I spose a stocker Excel hardly attracts attention, unlike anything on his wish list

If its an older supra (late 80's model) and its powered by a 2l turbo motor ie the 1GGTE avoid like the plague. Gutless and respond poorly to mods.

7M GTE versions are quicker, but the motor is prone to head gasket issues due to incorrect factory settings. Most would be fixed by now, but if not, its not a matter of if, but when it will do a hg. At least he can feel like he owns an EJ!

And if its a 1JZ GTE version hes onto a winner - awesome motors. I broke two.. but im the rare exception to the rule - smooth, reliable, make great power with mininmal mods.

Well... took the plunge & bought one from a dealer in Perth.

'90 Supra 7M GTE black 5sp 3.0l single turbo aerotop fully comp import by K & S Hart. Very straight, unmodded and in near perfect condition, previously owned by some guy in his 40's who traded for a new 350Z.

Thanks to all on here who gave advice & warnings where appropriate.
