Started taking the dog for a walk, on average we cover between 9-10kms a night 'walk time approx 2hrs'.
Had a look at my pedometer when I got home which shows Distance: 8.97km Steps: 12,219 Calories Burnt: 389kcal I'm assuming kcal stands for 389,000 calories burnt and understand it's an estimate, but would this sound roughly correct or is my device 'Samsung Gear NEO', on drugs?

Given the average person eats anywhere between 2000-4000 calories a day, I would say its on crack.

If you want to maximise your energy consumption on your walk try get your heart rate above 120 BPM, I know its hard to judge that without a heart rate monitor but for the average male 120 BPM puts you into a cycle of anaerobic stress, great for the heart as well if you have heart disease in the family (as I do) its enough to not do damage but also keep you fit

Every table / equation / calculation / fancy pants watch uses general assumptions about an individual to churn out a number.
Best way to do it is use the usual body indicators of sweat / shortness of breath and general feeling of exertion to see if you're working hard enough. The fitter you get, the harder it will be to achieve the above so you then have to work harder to get to that state. Simples.
