Do we know cost of the 2 models? Apparently there is a fixed global price and with the strong AUS $ they 'should' be pretty cheap...

Still unsure of the cost perthzed. One of the guys on here said it's going to be free on the $79 Cap with Vodafone, he wasn't sure about the $49 Cap. Similar story with a lot of providers over in Europe so i'd imagine it'll be the same here (free on the bigger caps / plans).

With the previous version of the iphone, you could buy the phone itself without registering or activating it on any network (only available network was AT&T). Then you simply go home, 'unlock' it and use it on any 2G network that you want. This version is supposedly going to require you to sign a contract, and activcate the phone with the service provider before you walk out of the store.

No more cheap, outright iphones (at least for the time being)

If it is sold outright, more than likely will be pretty expensive. Sucks hey, finally available in Oz, so much hype about the $199/$299 price tag and we can't get it anywhere near these prices!!! Someone please prove me wrong i want an iphone without having to cancel my contract and change providers etc

That got stopped with the original iphone. You needed to buy on a credit card only and had to sign up with a contract.

As for the iPhone 3G, until it is released it is still all speculation. The price Steve Jobs announced is for a 2 year contract, not outright price. So just sit back and wait a couple of weeks...

Really? When did that happen?

I got a friend in the States to get me one not long ago, he bought it from an Apple store and sent it over - no contract, no questions asked. Hope he's not getting charged by the month now hahaha.
