I stayed at the Hyatt in West Hollywood and would NEVER stay there again. Was next door to the Comedy Club and pretty much across the road from the House of Blues.

Good luck bro

Ok for San Fran stay at Fisherman's Wharf district. I stay at the Hyatt and recommend it highly. You can walk to China Town - Union Square or take the cable cars to it in 5 minutes. You can see Alcatraz from your hotel room as well.

With NY City you really need to do some thinking about what you are prepared to spend as it aint cheap to stay there full stop. Suggest you try these two sites for an indication of pricing first. Those close to Times Square, Central Park, Broadway are dear but very convenient for tourists.

We stayed Holiday Inn pretty much all the way (where possible) - well priced (around $100-150 for a twin room), clean and usually located close to the main attractions.

I dont believe in spending big on hotels for an extended trip (fair enough if its a night or 2), you will spend 6-8hrs in there so why waste money you can spend on doing touristy stuff.

They are all of pretty similar quality, nothing to complain about....was quite surprised how nice they were.

Only hidden costs are parking at some of them and whether or not breakfast is included. At the Express Inns the buffet is included and at the others its about $10 or so.
