It's way too easy to get your lic in this state (country?).

Doing a couple of little driving tests on a bright and shiny day doesn't prepare you for peak-hour traffic, night, rain, freeway, etc.

Combo?: I nearly got side swiped the other night when it was raining on the freeway during peak hour. Fuming! By a lady that looked like she was shi77ing herself for being there. (No P plates involved).

I'm not that old that I can't vividly recall some of the stupidity of myself & my mates whilst on Ps. However having teenage boys (including one currently on P plates) has made me rationalise some of the reasons I'm still alive:

A. We mostly drove vastly underpowered 4 cylinder crap-boxes, which was what we could afford. The likes of Renault 12s, minis, Escorts. With less than 50hp at the engine, burnouts or exceeding 120kph was physically impossible. Drag racing was done only as a joke.

B. When we did exceed the extremely moderate limits of our/cars abilities, we had far less inertia to deal with. The light mass of the vehicles coupled with the relatively low speeds meant that an "off" would be brought to a halt quickly, or perhaps with a light impact.

C. The numerous "brown trouser" moments from B forced us to learn our limits.

D Luck. My only crash ever was fishtailing my old man's Falcon into a tree while on Ps, just dumb luck no-one was injured.

Young (especially male) drivers will always push themselves & their cars to the limit and beyond. Setting these limits lower will result in less serious consequences for all involved. Combine this with proper training & track based motorsport as a proper outlet. That's what I'm doing before unleashing my boys onto the public.

lol v 7's

I had a s15 on p plates, got in my 2 worst situations in a 318i and a v6 commodore... never had any incidents with the s15...which was fairly fast for the time/for a p plater i guess. Doesnt matter what car you have its more to do with attitude, as said above getting licence needs to be harder.

Channel Seven News Poll...

Should P platers be restricted from having high-powered vehicles?

YES - 1902 559 077
NO - 1902 559 078

Text yes or no to the appropriate number. Results will be shown on tomorrows 6pm news.

Maybe ban stupid parents from letting their kids buy it in the first place, or in some cases, buying it for them!

whoops didnt see this thread.

I think P platers should be banned from rear wheel drive cars, and made to do a performance driving course before they are aloud to drive them or high powered cars.

You cant learn how to drive by doing one half day course.

The only way to learn to drive and to get into good habits is by driving.

P platers are still going to race no matter what car they drive. Heck they will still drive during curfew ( take off the P plates).

The areas that need to be addressed to stop these deaths are to educate P platers and THEIR PARENTS. We all pick up habits from our parents because they are normally the first to teach us behind the wheel. So by educating the parents as well should help to inform them of new driving techniques and laws.

Normally high performance cars are safer and handle better than average cars. Just look at wrx's. They have one of the best safety standards, are all wheel drive and have 4 pot brakes which are better than excels with no ABS. These cars when used correctly are hands down safer than the average car.
