Default Negotiating price of 2nd hand car

I'm buying a second hand car and am negotiating price. The guy is asking too much and the car has been for sale for a while. He wants 52k and I want to pay 49. He's telling me dealers are offering him 50k. I wouldn't have thought dealers would offer that much? Even if they did get it for 50k and bumped up the price 3K or so, their profit margins would be minimal? Do u guys reckon this guy is telling porkies? I don't want to lose the car, but I want to get a decent price.

Not much you can do if you really dont want to miss out. Honestly id give in if that were the case, what is another 1000 in the great scheme of things when its worth 50.

Offer him 50 and let him decide then, sounds like hes willing to trade to a dealer at 50.

Theres normally a bigger margin between private and trade-in prices, also what is it if you dont mind disclosing

Golf R32. 08 DSG with 5000kms. I've been keeping an eye on Car Sales and there are a few that haven't sold and have been up a while. I'll maybe offer him 50, but the impression he was giving me was that if he didn't get 52 he'd take it to a dealer. There are 3 other cars I'm also looking at and am yet to make an offer so will see how I go with those.

Find something else for 49, and walk away, if hes full of it, you will get a phone call offering 49.

If you really like the car, and dont want to risk it, then pay 50?

Crackpipes.

If you could trade in your car for $50, why would you waste your time selling it privately for $52...

Yeah exactly. And if private sellers are struggling to sell their cars why would a dealer touch it, cos surely he'd be aware that certain cars aren't selling.

if i had a car on the market for 2 months and a dealer was prepared to pay me 3.85% less of my asking price...i wouldnt wait and took it straight to the dealer, he is lying stick with 49k...i'd fill out the transfer form, got the bank cheque and put it on the table, take it or leave it!

If you really want the car, offer him $50k, being the "dealer" price - otherwise walk away.
