Motorplex Helmet Standards

Went to the Plex on the bike last night ( finished with a 10.887 @ 131 so was a good night ). Reckon I was about the middle of the runners getting scrutinized and 15 had already been thrown out for non complying helmets.

Cut and pasted directly from the motorplex web site and I suggest going to one of the Whoop Ass Wed event pages and printing out a copy to taking it with you. I am sure some of them don't know there own ( ANDRA ) standards.
If your helmet is over 12 years old then it is probably not acceptable for use on the Drag Strip. Look for the following markings to check if your helmet is ok to use for racing. Sometimes the label is under the padding inside the helmet.

Full Face or Open Face Helmets bearing any of these standards are acceptable;
SNELL SA 2000, SA 2005, SFI 31.2 (US)
SNELL M 2000, M2005, SFI 41.2 (US)
BS 6658-85 Type A (British)
SNELL 2000/2005 - SFI 31.1 (US)
BS 6658-1985 Type A/FR (British)
AS/NZS 1698/2006 (AS/NZS 1698)
AS 1698 by itself is no longer acceptable. Sux if it is a brand new helmet that has been on the shelf for a while. If there are no other standards then it must have the AS/NZS 1698/2006 on it.

If it has the AS 1698 & any of the other standards in the list above show them the print out, stand your ground and tell them to get fucked. Don't expect them to find it either. Find it first and straight out tell them it complies with XXX standard and here's the sticker/label

Some of these standards will be a sticker on the shell inside the lining or a label sown into the lining so you may have to pull it apart for a good look.

If your helmet complies then don't take their shit but if it doesn't don't waste their time trying. It is just putting them in a bad mood for everyone in the line behind you.

Does one of the mods want to sticky this till they change their minds again next year?

What about FIA standard race helmets?

MKVIGTI 08-01-2009 01:53 PM

If it isn't in that list you are wasting your time!!!

Stupid I know that you can run with an open face with the right sticker but a brand new full face with the old AS 1698 standard is unsafe

All comes down to public liability and some office jockey with no clue making decisions.

.....so getting a good sticker maker to 'arrange' a compliant sticker would be just as effective given the mental capacity of the scrutineers at the plex.

The F.I.A. don't have their own standard. They specify the relevant Snell or ECE standard. ANDRA are in bed with the NHRA, they love US standard and the Jap helmet makers can get fkd.

I have an $800 Kevlar composite Arai international standard rally helmet (ECE 22-03) that is accepable for Targa but unacceptable for street drags, go figure.
Your Stilo will be Snell approved.

If you wanted to really stick it up the andra clowns, and your helmet while being an older one, but still compliant to FIA regs, print the FIa page and show it to the complaining scrute, given that ANDRA still fall under FIA ruling, the higher bodies rules should overturn whatever ccrap andra are trying to push..

When my young bloke bought a Helmet in Bali it had no stickers so we managed to remove the sticker off a $12 bike helmet & put it on, this was about 4yrs ago but I might check Kmart & see if the stickers have any of the above numbers on them as my helmet is only 12mths old & I don't see why I should change it, fine for a bike but not inside a bloody car.
