Without a doubt anybody associated with a company involved with the mining or exploration of gold is going to be quite safe in these times.

One of the most uncertain and testing times from an economic perspective for most in their lifetime - as a result gold price increases as it is usually invested in as a safeguard to testing economic times (eg.a recession eg. now). Gold recently hit an all time high and with it being suggested this recession will be quite lengthy I have no doubt people in those industries will be quite safe.

All of my crew flew out from RNO today.

They are lucky in the fact that i will find work for all of them if they want it.
Downside, bye bye 8 & 6, hello 4 & 1.
Upside, more $$$

Still plenty of opportunities for those that are looking.

Exactly Phil. Egg shells is exactly what they are walking on. From what hubby is telling me the guys and girls are feeling the pinch, no room for even the unavoidable errors... someone has to be at fault for every little thing. They are all holding thier breath. They are told thier jobs are secure but they are seeing the need to be absolutly perfect... FIFO = Fit In Fuck Off

Having said that, Of all the mines he's been on this is by far his favourite, he enjoys his work there...just be nice to feel secure.

Just flew home from MKO (mount keith operations BHP nickelwest) we lost 100 BHP staff, mainly from production crews and 200-300 contractors today. what a mess of a day it was. rocked up to work and was immediately told there would be a safety meeting back at camp. when we arrived back at camp it was a 5 min address then it was go line up and see if u still have a job! treated just like a commodity/number *sigh*

almost everyone from MKO has sent home for 2-8 weeks as they suspend production operations, and try to run the joint on a skeletal crew.
will def be an interesting year.

condolences to anyone here from RNO, and all the best to them.
