BHP halts Ravensthorpe mine, sheds 2,100 jobs
Is it just me or does it seem like every large project BHPB start ends in tears and EPIC FAIL?

recession hasnt even hit us hard yet. What im afraid off is that Americans and rest of the world are touting Obama as the saviour... This mess cannot be cleared up by one man and definitely not overnight.

So where's Krudd with good economic policies to help keep Australia out of recession...
Tumbleweeds go by... Oh he's off talking to Lance Armstrong about cycling, yup that will help the struggling families that voted him in...

Ha ha, too true. Ravensthorpe was an exercise in bad timing- built it when input costs where peaking, bring online when metal prices crash. I reckon they will struggle to ever justify turning it back on, not likely to see nickel at $50,000/tonne anytime again soon.

So far Krudd has spent more time out of the country since he was elected in than being here. Maybe it's time to start being the Prime Minister and looking after Australia's affairs? BHP halts this mine, all the other business that feed off that mine will also have to lay off workers and the chain reaction grows. At the same time, these companies behind the mines are very happy to take all their projects off shore under the pretense WA is in a boom and can't do the work. The media talks about these billion dollar jobs going on, but are they being done in Australia (keeping the whole chain working)?

The recession won't really hit us for another 2 years, we're probably looking at a 4 year recession. On the plus side you'll be able to pick up an SS ute dirt cheap.

Alcoa Australia is monitoring Kwinana refinery as it continues to run as a loss and the possibilities of it closing down are very real. The AMWU member on all sites agreed to defer pay increases to help ensure our members keep their jobs. All non essential contractors and consultants are going or gone off all their sites. The state secretary informed the mass meeting that there a number of large projects in the north west that will not go ahead in the foreseeable future. This is bigger than one or two governments. The only positive out of all these times is to be grateful for what you have and enjoy the present!
