Depends on the App. Some will close, others have settings to keep the app open once you press the home button.

If you Jailbreak your phone, you can use Cydia (download manager, like AppStor, but free free free, and has shitloads of cool things in there) which has an App called Backgrounder.

This app lets your HOLD the home button on any app, and it pushes it into the background and runs until you do the same thing again. Good for streaming radio and stuff that you want to keep running in the background while you do other things.

This is the link i used to Jailbreak mine. Works a treat. I was a bit hesitant to do it in the beginning, on a 3 hour old iPhone, but very glad i did. Pretty easy to do as well mate.

Not sure i've you've seen inside Cydia but there are thousands of custom developed apps in there. Yeah i know what they say, when you jailbreak your iphone some kid loses faith in the tooth-fairy or whatever .. But i'm a nerdy type person and having access to all these extra features which empowers the iphone even further is something worth doing, especially now its easily done.

If you're not into all the extra gadgets and whatnot, i wouldn't recommend it, but if you're into customizing your iphone to look and feel the way you want it to it's the way to go.

I was a bit iffy at first, but after having done it, i think it's one of the best put together hacks/cracks for a phone i have seen, and the content within Cydia is quality.

Yes it's safe. Jut completely discharge the battery every now and again to keep it calibrated.
