Yeah at this stage I wouldn't use LED as main lights, AS they have not yet quite perfected it.
they are great for feature lights, as said above, water features, stair lighting etc.

but i would hold off on room lighting and they are not cheap either.

just put normal down lights in for now. and change later when they are cheaper and better.

My GF has some LED's in her new home and they are hopeless...too weak and take too long to brighten up.
Halogen are cheap and effective and are not a hazard if installed correctly (ie away from any insulation) by any reasonable sparky. I have had them in my house for 13 years without any issues.

I've been looking into them myself, I have a friend who works in the light design biz, and apparently a new range is due to hit market shortly with some new technology. May be well worth waiting out on. I find out next week myself.

Sorry mate, i meant switchmode, so using a fet set up in buck configuration. Should be constant voltage regardless of input voltage. I think you can even get some that are dimmable...

However, flucuating voltages dont help either. Some people in the metro area have problems with light golbes blowing constantly (however this is usually the normal 60watters). This is usually due to irregularities in voltages. Less voltage, higher current, blown element.

You can dim LED's however i am unsure as to how effective it will be. When you dim some LED's, sometimes because of this dissimularities when being made they can show up as different colours. Ive been out of the housing game for a little too long now though, they most likley have LED dimmers using a PWM.

The Philips LED lamps are dimmable and work off low voltage transformers (Possums, mouse and old iron core. Will not work on Redbacks or Vipers)

Make sure you get a proper tranformer with them - as Iv got mine hooked up to the Halogen 70W transformer...and it shits itself after a few minutes.

But energy savings is good considering you will be able to pay the fkers off in a few years with the amount of power u dont spend.

your looking at 9x CREE led's...at 1w each. So 9w for a globe.
Produces no heat, very bright, and doesnt hurt your eyes.

Hey Buddy

What did you pay per downlight?

Cheers
