we fit both LV and LED to our cabinetry at work.

LV tend to blow more frequently, but teh globes can be replaced in situ which is ok. And the colour is warm white (yellow tinge) which can be very bright if you are directly under the light.

The LED's we use come from 2 suppliers. One uses 3 LED globes and the other uses 9 (per light). The colours are cool white and warm white with warm being slightly yellower in colour, brightness is the same.
The difference is (in my opinion) that during daylight hours, the LED lights do not seem as bright unless you are directly under them. The beam of light is even more direct then with normal halogen/LV lights.
All our LED lights have a step-down transformer and we have never had either one fail (to this point, touch wood). These lights do not have replaceable globes and the only way to change them is to replace the entire light.

The lights we use are intended for cabinetry/furniture, but we have supplied them to clients who have fitted them to bulkheads and onto kickboards (the base around the kitchen cabinets) with great results.

They are only a fire hazard if they are not installed correctly. If they are installed to standards, you should never have a problem with them.

nm86wa, the best bet is to get whatever ones you want. After they have installed them, jump up in the ceiling and have a squiz. What i normally do is clear the insulation away from the hole, put a piece of 100mm PVC pipe (about 100-200mm long) around the hole (usually the downlight hole is 63mm) and then suspend the transformer from trusses. This will prevent any fires that could possibly happen. Otherwise, as soon as the sparkies are done, go in and make sure they did that (not excactly that people have different ways of doing things obviously). If not, get them back.
