ROBBER FLEES WITH PERSONALISED NUMBER PLATES


A bank robber was jailed for ten years yesterday after his attempt to raid a bank ridiculously failed because his getaway car had personalised plates of his name.




In what could be labelled one of the dumbest criminal acts of 2009, James Snell from Manchester planned a set up with his brother to rob £100,000 from a bank at Halifax and used his BMW with number plates 'J4 MES' as the getaway car.

His gang, which consisted of four robbers, was busted in their tracks-literally- when a witness recognised the number plate on the blue Beemer and gave details to police. It wasn’t long before the uniquely plated BMW was traced to Snell’s hideaway where police found the gang red-handed with more than £30,000 of the cash in bank notes.
The gang’s plan was to smash their way through the Halifax branch using metal drain covers, steal £100,000 and flee undetected. Their plan was successful up to the ‘fleeing undetected’ part before a witness claimed they saw passenger lean out, lift a drain cover from the road and the car drove off with 'J4 MES' being the last thing in their sight.
This ridiculous act of robbery cost the gang 12 years in jail and 'J4 MES' being impounded.
