Free DVD software with 5.1?
Can anybody recommend a free DVD player that supports 5.1 channels?
I have used various versions of Power DVD (version 7 being the latest) and VLC, but they only seem to output in stereo, even when you select 5.1 from the software. For example, in VLC, when I go to Audio>Audio Channels I can see and select 5.1, yet on the receiver it is only in stereo. I don't think it's a problem with the receiver, as I open the same DVD in Windows Media Player, the receiver picks up all the channels instantly. My PS3 also has full surround sound too, so I do believe the receiver is fully functional. Has anyone got any suggestions? or maybe some VLC tweaking is in order? If it helps, the receiver is a JVC RX-6012v running an optical cable from my Realtek on board sound card (gigabyte motherboard). The simple answer would be to use Windows Media Player, but prolonged use of that program may result in various objects being hurled at the monitor. |

You can add in realtek HD audio manager.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/27...-audio-manager Hope this is helpfull to you mate. You need the right program interface for your motherboard as well there is a link from that page also. I use this and it runs 5.1 no problem.

All you need http://ac3filter.net/ Takes any "shitty" Media Player and transforms it into something useful! I use VLC.
I have a crap Motherboard with onboard sound (6ch) running into a 5.1 Logitech Z680 THX system and it than made movies and music really come to life. If you have a half decent mobo or sound card you'd be half way there anyway....

http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ (Media Player Classic)
http://www.cccp-project.net/ (All codecs required) you'll be good to go with the above, and not bloated like power dvd, and other players. |

Thanks for your help guys.
I managed to get VLC to co-operate in the end. I already had the Realtek HD manager installed, which is why I was confused as WMP worked fine, but VLC and Power DVD did not. I also didn't manage to get the AC3 filter to override VLC settings, they just didn't want to party. I had to go in to VLC's preferences and change the Audio output module from default to "Win32 waveOut extension output", and change the WaveOut audio device to "Microsoft Soundmapper" and it worked. Fuck knows why, I just remembered I had to do the same thing on my old PC when I was getting Sonar 7 to run. Either way, I now have 5.1 VLC goodness. |
