Any of you enthusiasts see the bike race in Leederville last night?

I like the single speed ones, Im a fan of the stuff you see the couriers on in town, but the fixie idea is a bit to unpractical for most.

I have a newish giant mountain bike, about 1000$ worth, I wish it didnt have front shockies now as I enjoy general riding round the river and stuff mostly, a few gravel tracks, I find the shocks just sap power, even when locked out...

Try riding a mountain bike on gravel without shockies though. Nearly breaks your wrists!

A lot of the "elitist" couriers ride fixies with no brakes, but many of them use single speeds with free-wheeling hub, and a single brake caliper to help them slow down... better option IMHO.

Some of those guys also run super narrow handle bars, and a lot of them are using time trial frames. One courier I see around town uses an ex-Japanese Kirin racing frame, complete with original entrant number hanging from the top tube !

These just seem to be in fashion at the moment. From a maintanance view they are really easy as there are less parts obviously. They also make you work harder at times, as you can't change down to easier gears when you get to a hill.

PS. BAS - that Pinarello dogma is absolute porn.
I am on the lookout at the moment for a new racing bike and will either go for a Pinarello, Colnago or perhaps Specialized. Don't have any pictures of my bikes on my computer, but sold my Trek last year, so only have my time trial bike (McMurdo - sucks when going riding in the hills) and my cross country bike (Avanti Hammer).
