Default ADSL vs Cable internet

I'm having a house built and you can opt for cable interweb, company called E-wire - http://www.e-wire.net.au/. I've currently got ADSL with Westnet which is pretty average speeds as I'm 5kms from the exchange. And I can only get a retarded type of ADSL 2 called ADSL 2 reach (?) which is twice the price of my current ADSL. Is the cable option any good, apparently it's limited to 2mb or something? I spoke to the salesman there, but didn't have a fucking clue what he was talking about. So if anyone can shed some light on this intriguing mystery I'd appreciate it.

Looking at the deals they offer its very pricey for what you are actually getting out of it. At your new place are you able to get a standard ADSL 2 connection or will you need to use reach again? If it's possible I would try and use a standard ADSL 2 connection.

In terms of getting a good deal, have you tried www.tpg.com.au ? With them you get more for your money than most ISP's

http://whirlpool.net.au/

All answers regarding Australian any internet connection can be found there.

The simplest answer is any ADSL connection of the same connection speed as a cable connection will outperform as it has a discreet bandwidth. IE - not shared with all users on the "cable".

However, SOME places have blindingly fast cable connections (100 Mbs - 1 Gbs) which the shared bandwidth becomes almost incidental depending on user load.

Again , refer to the above site. It even has a page where you can compare all price, downloads, connections etc that ISPs capable of utilising your local exchange will provide.

I'll have a look at Whirlpool. I'm staying in the same suburb (tapping), I think there is a sub-exchange or something to do with a Rim that means we can't get anything than ADSL 2+ reach, but thats like $120 compared to $60 for ADSL 1, so I don't think ADSL 2 is an option.

DONT GO EWIRE!!!

all ive heard is complaints about the speed, as it drops dramatically during peak times. Unfortunately, as said, cable users share one back haul connection, which gets choked up when everyone is trying to get their porn fix. ADSL is the answer, even if you only have access to ADSL 1.

Unfortunately im forced to choose e-wire, which is getting conencted within a few days, because telstra suck and refuse to upgrade my exchange. Ill let you know what my internet performance is like.

Edit: although nearly forgot, apparantly e-wire are supposed to be doing an upgrade, and offering new plans soonish, or so its said on the whirlpool site, however there is no news about it on the e-wire website.

Have you got a Active Phone at the address as yet.

I can complete a Service Qualification (SQ) on your phone line and advise possible speeds and if ADSL1 or ADSL2+ is available.

I'm a shareholder in the company that owns e-wire and I can confirm upgrades are progressively being rolled out to combat the lack in back-haul and network capacity.

you just made me less pessimistic about my upcominc connection

Do you know what sort of time frame and for what areas or is that pretty much all they've let on?

Unfortunately that's all I know at this stage, the board keeps it all pretty close to their chest. I missed the AGM where I was going to ask alot of these questions, if I hear any more I'll be sure to let you all know.
