Depending on which electorate you live in, a vote for any party other than the big two may well be wasted, or worse, counted as a vote for the party you LEAST want to win.

In Australia, we use the preferential party voting system (look it up, i won't bore you) where smaller parties divert 'preferences' to the large parties in turn for favors should that larger party win Government.

Basically if you vote Greens because you dislike the liberals and HATE the Labor party, it might surprise you to find out that Greens usually give your 'preference' to Labor, as was the case at the last election.

For example, say there are 10000 voters in your electorate, and 4999 of them vote Liberal, 3000 vote for Labor, while the remaining 2001 vote for the Greens - Who wins the Seat? Labor.

As the votes are counted, the greens become eliminated first, as they have the lowest number of votes. The second preference (if you ticked the 'vote Green' box) is automatically given to Labor.

Congratulations, Labor win the seat by 5001 votes to 4999 and you might as well wave goodbye to future prosperity.

^^ Yes, I think preference voting should be made a lot clearer than it is.

i.e. it must be written clearly on a minor parties leaflet/advertising that a vote for XXX gives a preference vote to Labor/Liberal. Too many people don't understand it.

The minor parties do not choose where your preferences go - you choose your own preferences on the ballot paper. Just don't follow the "how to vote cards".
