problem with england is they have too many individuals....rooney/gerrard/beckham in the past and so on. Generally tournaments are won by TEAMS and not individuals and as has happened with Real Mardid over the past few years it will show at this world cup. "Stars" want to do just that...entertain+show how good they are which generally means a new contract at the end of the tournament (with a high paying club like Get Real Madrid).

Take a look at Greece, who's won european championship in 2004...a team of no names, just like diving italians of 2006 (other than Totti, the rest weren't big names).

Even though I hate english soccer team (love EPL though so go figure) if they can play as a team they will go far but so far i have not seen that in the past years

2006 - Rooney Sent Off - Lose to Portugal on Penalties
2002 - Goalkeeper Error - Lose 2-1 to Brazil Seaman Lobbed by Ronaldinho from a mile out
1998 - Beckham Sent Off - Lose to Argentina on Penalties
1994 - Did not Qualify
1990 - Made the Semi Finals, Pearce and Waddle miss to lose on Penalties to the Germans
1986 - Go out to Argentina after Maradona scores the two most famous goals in World Cup History.

England have something in their favour for this world cup that they haven't had in any of the above. That is a professional Manager who will have his team well organised and disciplined going into this world cup. Apart from Beckham, England have no majeor injury concerns.

Spain if Torres is fit should be favourites. England are definately a contender as are the Germans and Italians. Also the French, Dutch, Brazilians and Argentines have all had average qualifying campaigns and have somewhat flown under the radar - you still can't write them off.

I'd expect the likes of Serbia, Portugal and maybe Denmark to make a good account of themselves, but none of these have the quality to go further than the QF. I can see Australia giving their best but to be honest I don't think they are good enough to get out of the group. Its the world cup though, so anything can happen!

Can't wait, this is the biggest show on Earth!

If one of them finishes second in their group and other finishes first, they could meet in the semi-final.
Either way, it would be one hell of a game!
I forgot england was in group C .. would be an epic game. I think if france make it to the finals they will most likely knock them out or brazil. Tough to choose.

That makes perfect sense. It's hard to name more than a couple of British players in most of the top 5 teams in the EPL.

Arsenal - I can't think of anyone other than Theo Walcott off the top of my head.
Chelsea - John Terry, Ashley Cole....????

Enough of my thread hijack... back to the World Cup

If Australia finish 2nd in there pool and England 1st they will face each other in the next round. Looking forward to that - just hope that is the way they finish.
