Everyone's seen Avatar. Remember when they were in the medical room at the start of the show and the guy had some results up on a huge see-through screen in the main room? Then he picked up a glass plate (like an iPad, but a little bigger) and swiped his hand from the screen to the 'pad'. The image on that screen/information transferred instantaneously and he was able to move away with it and go see a patient or whatever it was.
That's a future iPad right there.

It's all about potential.

I think some reporter on 96fm this morning summed it up brilliantly. To roughly quote: "It might seem like it's nothing brilliant now, but it's all about potential. This is only the beginning... the idea."
Apple has to get this thing out there, get feedback, get experience, get programmers used to it, and as technology grows it will improve.
Remember the first iPod, less than 10 years ago? Bulky (compared to now), small storage (was big then!), black and white screen, 5 individual buttons, expensive, could only do music... now an iPhone does it all, and with 10 better/more everything.

People might not want/need it now (eg me, and I'm an Apple fan and designer) but in 5 years, or 10 years, it may become a larger part of life than you can now imagine.

Maybe it was a dream or something i read, but I believe Adobe are working on some sort of "Creative Suite Light" software. It would be aimed at designers so that they are able to show clients ideas on the fly (eg. since it's all about touch, you can quickly 'sketch' up a page layout in seconds, or move a few things around in a PDF etc etc)
Nice idea! It's never intended (or currently capable) to be as functional as a MacBook Pro with CS5, but you get the gist.

"the punch" referred to it well. in that only the worlds most committed virgins would line up and buy one.

Yeah I think it has potential and I can definitely see it being used commercially. For your average Joe Schmo on the street I can't see it. Bill Gates was extolling the virtues of the tablet PC back in 2000 saying by 2005 we'll all be using one, but we're not because there's no keyboard, they're not portable and they break when you drop them. It's just a big Iphone and the main thing with an Iphone is that it's small and thats the issue. Obviously there's lots of other tech missing, but people don't want to carry around something that big. As it stands it's a gimmick, but Apple have proven their detractors wrong time and again.

Yeah I use a little IBM x series for lazy browsing so could see myself using it for that, but not much else.

Other than home use for lazy browsing, I do like that you can run it as an external touch screen monitor for your current pc.

Sorta like that Pandora example...

I'm really not an apple fanboy but I'm about to sound like one....
People said the mouse would never take off, but it did.
Many said the iPod would never take off, but it did.
Many said Apple TV would never take off, and it didn't.
So if the iPad is a iPod success or an AppleTV failure only time will tell.

I personally believe in the next 10 years touch technology will replace the mouse for most general pc use.

I'll probably get one for the misses so she can browse the web without having to use my laptop - which means I can download more porn without having to hide it & clearing my 'history' pages

Interesting thought. I guess there's a number of things for and against it.
Wouldn't mind hearing some other people's opinions on that.
