Default Fixed screen for home theatre projector

Hi Guys -

Have just about all the other bits assembled for the home theatre, now I just need a decent screen to project onto!

Definitely looking a getting a fixed screen (not pull-down or motorised), and currently researching what type of material would be best for the room it's in (considering sources, ambient light, projector, distance of projector to screen, viewing angles, etc. etc.).

Any recommendations out there on a resonable brand of screen? Screen Technics and Dynamic Screens seem to come up locally.

Also - recommended places to buy/install?

Thanks for the help

Nik

There are projection screen specific paints which you can use to convert the wall to the "screen".

as above you can buy ultra flat white projector paint for walls ... i have this in my theatre room and its a perfect picture ... and allows you to use the whole wall for a screen ...

As said above the paint works very well, my sister has
done this in her cinema room and finished it off with a
nice wooden border stained black.

I've had both the paint and the fixed screen and the screen wins hands down. Problem with the paint is not the paint itself, it's the fact that the surface of the wall is porous so you will always have slight bumps which on a HD picture certainly causes a degree of "pixelation" as it were.

I got my screen when I got my projector (from West Coast Hifi in Osborne Park) and it cost somewhere around the $700 mark for roughly 120" which compared with $6000 for the projector wasn't that bad considering the improvement it gave me over the special paint.

Make sure you get a good HDMI cable (or whatever signal type you are using)

what projector have you got??

screen is better than the wall but costs you a lot more of course... when i set my room up i couldnt decide on fixed or motorised so i just found a cheapo ebay motorised one which cost like $80 inc postage brand new and decided to use that for a while til i could decide... it looks so good ive never bothered upgrading it..

when i upgrade to 1080p i will probably upgrade it since ive upgraded the rest of the system pretty much.. bring on LED 1080p's!

if you havent got a subby yet, check out some SVS's !! fuckin insane bass!

Nik, my brother has an awesome home theater set up at his place. He spent ages researching screens and stuff. I'll find out which screen he ended up with and i'm sure if your interested he wouldn't mind you coming around for a look.

Thanks all and thanks Darren for the extra info to come.

Projector is a Panasonic PT-AE3000, room is pretty well light controlled and the projector will be relatively close to the screen, so I (think I) should be ok with a white, low-gain screen.
