Semiotics is the study of semiosis or sign process and signification. As such, I'd suggest the "piece" is a student's text on a process of signification. The breakdown of her communication or signification whether visual or aural is probably to displace the reader into an unstable state due to the readers inability to understand or grasp at the meaning of the writer.
A lot of "artistic" pieces deal with displacing the reader from the text as it provides an easier understanding of how communication works rather than when communication occurs as expected. Simply, we learn more from the failure/mistakes in signification between writer/text/reader than we do when it all goes as we expect. The responses here are proof that you are displaced by the student's text, as such, it's very successful assuming that was the student's aim. I hold a Bachelor in Film/TV from a school of communication and cultural studies at Curtin. I had to study semiotics, semantics, pragmatics when all I wanted to do was make films.

Maybe she should learn to cook instead? Clearly too far away from the kitchen again.

LOL . . . no , thankfully, they only forced me to critique performance pieces such as the example shown. Be assured though, I have had to critique/analyse some strange "performances".
I don't think "Interior Semiotics" was good as it dealt with shocking the audience rather than utilising other more advanced and articulate methods of showing failure in communication. Communication is also based in the culture it was produced, as such, what "meaning" was conveyed when a piece is constructed and what we "read" now is often different. As an example: I'm sure this was a great ad for the generation it was written for - it wouldn't even make print now. Although, I do get a laugh from this one. Well, again you have to wonder about this ad in today's society. Anyone here want to hop in a shower with a bunch of guys and put your "heads" together? This one would get the advertising team arrested for kiddie porn. What the ads above all exemplify though is how "meaning" is an interrelated interaction between writer/text/reader and the culture that they operate within. I hope the above helps some of you understand the discourse of the "Interior Semiotics" which is just some post-modern poor student's gross (gross meaning lacking delicacy) twist on Rosler's "Semiotics of a Kitchen" which is a famous piece on semiotics. Rosler's semiotics piece above was a 70's feminist reaction piece to past advertisements such as : Interesting comment JME in light of the above
