Default Require Alloy Welding (v.small job) - Saturday Morning 11/09/2010

Hey Guys

Found a 5-8cm crack along the bottom of my front mount intercooler tank on my Turbo Diesel Rodeo.

Chasing someone for a quick repair job. I will remove from car and degrease the item. Need someone who is decent at alloy welding to repair.

Hoping to have this done tomorrow morning if possible, bit of a last minute thing.

If anyone is able to help out - let me know ur price, please no amatuers tho

TD Rodeos crack the intercooler at the bottom driver's side near the mount all the time. I've tried to get someone to repair them in the past but have been told it's usually unsuccessful and will usually crack there again. They're hard to buy secondhand and when I priced them the wreckers wanted $600- $800 for one! I just pushed some 'knead it' epoxy putty into the crack and it worked a treat. Is yours blowing oil out on the front bumper?

Edit; Don't use brake clean to degrease it or no one will want to weld it. There's a chemical in some solvent based sprays that make Phosgene gas when burnt.....Nasty shit, makes you die.

Yeah exactly how i found out it was cracked - found some oil spray on the bumper.

Cracked on the passenger side - right near the mount. Im considering doing it myself with epoxy putty - you recommend 'knead it'? Else ive heard of the Devcon (alloy specific one) before. Any recommendations? Might do both sides as a pre-emptive thing.

Cheers tho - exactly what has happened

Now that I think of it Adz, I used Devcon I think too. Can't remember exactly but I bought it from Veale autoparts. 2 part putty that smells like Araldite and you can't get the shit off your fingers after kneading it together. I reckon putty may allow a bit more flex than a weld and be possibly less likely to crack again, no harm in trying it.

Sounds like a done deal - i see that selleys do a 'steel' knead it - suitable for alloy and black in colour, might give it a shot.

I'll go have a look in the shop tomorrow - see what they have in the devcon range

Devcon is ideal for intercooler cracks as has a slightly thinner consistancy and flows into the crack better. Make sure that the area is clean, and leave it set overnight before using if possible.
