WA police trial new speed cameras

WESTERN Australia has begun trialling speed cameras inside police vehicles.

Police say if the trial is successful, six more vehicles could be used in WA as part of the state government's road-safety strategy.

Queensland and Victoria have had cameras inside their police vehicles for many years, while NSW recently reintroduced them.

WA has also used speed cameras in police cars in the past, but not since the 1990s.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Michelle Fyfe said in-vehicle cameras would be more time-efficient, safer for the camera operators, increase operating hours, and prolong the life of expensive camera equipment.

``If we can get people to stay within the speed limit, that will save lives. If you don't speed, you won't get caught,'' she said.

The new cameras will be used at speed-related serious crash sites, areas where complaints had been made about speeding, school zones, and areas where more than 15 per cent of road users exceeded the posted speed limit.

They are aparently using T5 Volkswagen transporters
with a big glass window with the camera behind it.

our parts guy told us when he went to the place decking them out.
