Wasn't there a very similar segment on top gear last night with BMW doing the exact same thing?

The California-based technology giant has sent seven test cars a total of 1600km without a human touching the controls at all, the New York Times reported.

The cars know speed limits, traffic patterns and road maps, Mr Thrun's posting says. They use video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to detect other cars.

While this is an achievement itself, imo you can never replace a human behind the wheel.

I've driven through a number of neighbourhoods where kids have been playing on the street and have slowed down just to be on the safe side, would rather plenty of time and space to react to a kid unexpectedly running onto the road to chase after a ball.

I don't know how well such automated systems would be able to do the same thing, suppose we will have to wait and see how far this technology goes before it hits any limitations.

This sort of stuff would be perfect for big highway commutes. Have a little wifi connection so the cars can all talk to each other (i.e. 1 reports kids near the road up ahead / crash ahead - all cars behind are aware prior to arriving at that spot).

Now if in the meantime they can give me a screen that shows me the correct speed limit of the road I am on... That would be win.

Can't see it ever being implemented. Who is going to get the speeding fine ifthe car gets it wrong and when it is right would be a masive loss in government revenue.

Auto pilot down the freeway to bunbury would be nice but I know I enjoy driving ( and riding the gixxer ) I'll be hanging out as long as I can if it is ever introduced.

Who's gonna get sued when the system does cause a fatality???

Oh yea would be a crapload less scary seeing twits doing their makeup, eating cereal, talking on phone, facing the backseat screaming at the kids for km at a time etc... But you'd want them them to have some sort of external indication the computer was doing it.
