Default Trailer light issue

Picked the new GTI up this week with genuine VW towbar fitted. Came with one of the fancy 13 pin Euro plugs and an adaptor cable to go to a flat 7 pin plug. The trailer I need to tow has a small 7 pin plug so bought an adaptor ( yes thats tow adaptors much as i didn't want to do it ) from Auto one and everything works sweet until I turn the parking lights or headlights on. This makes the tail lights and indicators on the trailer have a spaz attack. As soon as I turn the lights off indicators and brake lights work fine again.

Any ideas???

Might go put multi meter on a few pins and see if its something in the socket on the car or something further along.

I remember that someone I know had a BMW X5 and it needed to have a special module fitted so that their trailer with led lights would work.

Yea went searching and looks like that is the issue. Probably need a dummy load thing ( or buy the mate some old fashioned lights ). Wonder if I can get one thats built into the plug adaptors and kill 2 birds with one stone.

Got a trailer that I think has normal globes to try tomorrow. I'll be a bit pissed VW didn't mention it was a likely issue with their systems but fingers crossed it is an easy fix.

Same thing happened on my mate's Tow-Rag. VW reckoned they had never heard of it as well. Cable tied some normal trailer lamps under the trailer was the fix. He tried resistors in the adapter, but it didn't work. Classic case of the Germans making something overly complicated for no good reason and it still doesn't work properly.

I can't tow trailers with LED lights either with my hilux. I believe it's something to do with the earth wire. LEDs need a constant and strong earth to work and I don't think this is the case with most trailer wires. So, now I tow trailers with normal globes, with no problems

You need resistors for your trailer as the LED lights don't draw enough current. This is usually an issue with indicators on european vehicles.
