Rather than a new thread.
Did anyone see the article in today's west regarding the new technology Police cars? - Full Numberplate recognition system (Suspect this has been in trial for some time), via 4 sensors on each corner of the light bar on the roof. - New 'Starchase system', Fitted to the front bumber of the car and "fires adhesive tracking devices at fleeing vehicles" In addition to full 3G computer system for database connectivity (already in use) Video camers (Possibly IP, for remote view back at base), front and rear.

Is this going to be fitted to every police car?
Crazy amount of money if it is. Personally I don't think we have that many chases needing pew pew tracking bullets to be fired at cars or the need for automated numberplate scanning. I'd rather the money go into pay rises for the cops or training more cops. Seems more like the cop cars will become rolling cash machines for the government.

I take it the plate scanning being in the light bar should be fairly straight forward to move to another vehicle when it comes time to be replaced. Sure it will cost a bomb to install initially but hopefully the system will outlast a couple of cars. Tracking gun sounds like a bit of wank. How the hell is a Commonwhore going to get close enough to a fast car or bike to actually hit it without the projectile having to have enough weight and speed to be a major public safety issue.

On the news it said the fitout cost approx. 20K more then a standard cop car. I like the idea of the front and rear cameras but for 20k getting a video, numberplate recognition and a james bond GPS tracker is pretty shit.

sorry to reference back in the thread, but i've had cops in both xr6s and bettys revving their engines next to me at the lights trying to instigate a drag and also had em tailgating or pulling along side me and accelerating/decelerating to entice me to race
when they tailgate and do the along side you thing, it's fkn intimidating. singling people out coz of the car they choose to drive (it's stock and near new, if it's such a fkn issue to have an sti why do they allow them to be sold in the first place??) is straight out discrimination in my book |

I suspect that with the in-car technology, and the instant database lookups - There will soon be a hoon mark placed on people's numberplates within the database, which will also detect hoons cruising around.
