what i dont understand about tribal tats is the fact that its a cultural tattoo and people get it when they are clearly not a Maori or a Pacific islander. i like my tattoos to have some meaning

Pacific Islanders and Maori's are not the only tribes - being from Austrlia makes people think of the closest and current examples only. You'd be doing well to recognise the different tribal markings as to where they are from and what they mean.
