you can retract a statement. The cops wont like it as they will have wasted their time and their case won't have a leg to stand on, but you wouldn't be the first 'witness' to retract a statement.

Just say it was 'hearsay' and you are unsure of the truth and wish to withdraw your statement.

I would still be seeking legal aid
