I'd go an original FJ and rebuild it over the new one. Saw an absolutely mint one over here in Bali last week. Not a spot of rust on it... Makes me regret ever selling mine

'Serious' 4wding isn't really something that interests me - I'd just be after something i can load up with surfboards and take it to some of the more remote breaks - the ones with less kooks.

Also the 'hose-out' type interior is a big plus, i'm sick of trying to vacuum dog hair and sand out of the current ride.

I think that with 52k driveaway, you get a lot of car for your money.

i have a solution! buy a 89-90 suzuki sierra for arround about 2.5k and then put the other 47.5k into doing it up! i had a sierra for 6 years and never let me down and is one of the best 4x4s in the world. all it comes down to is rugged simplicity!!!

Just got one priced up at Toyota Osb Park.. Was ~$52k with all options (racks, sliders, matts, towball etc).

Car drove well - shame about the auto only (but for business everyday - i probably wouldnt complain). Engine and box felt strong and plenty of room inside.

A decent Toyota 4wd for ~$50k new is a good buy!! Still cant justify the extra $10k-$15k to get a low specced 'lux.

Was told the wait for a FJ is 2-3 months already. MAY consider mid year.

Except for it's serious lack of grunt and capacity.
Other than that, yes, Sierra's aren't bad I suppose. Especially with a beefy SAS setup from a old Hilux welded in.

If I were to fork out around 50k on a 4WD I'd be getting a VERY old Defender or a Stage1 Series III Land Rover. Rebuilding with stronger drivetrain and then dropping a Mercedes OM617 turbo diesel motor. The most reliable turbo diesel ever made and perfect for offroading.

...and then you'd have the most practical, unstoppable and reliable 4WD you can find...that can carry shit loads, can be hosed out and has a bit of classic adventure prestige behind it
