Prepare now for dangerous weather for WA South West of a line from Jurien Bay to Albany.
Monday 27 June 2011 – 4:45 PM
If you live between Jurien Bay and Albany you need to prepare your home and family now for the dangerous weather including damaging winds with locally destructive gusts, abnormally high tides and flash flooding coming tomorrow.

This includes people in Jurien Bay, Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown and Albany and surrounding areas.

WHAT TO DO:

FESA's State Emergency Service (SES) has these tips to help you and your family prepare:
  • Store or weigh down loose objects around your home or work like outdoor furniture that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds, causing damage or injury.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with a battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit.
  • Organise an emergency plan, including a relocation plan for your family and pets in case your home becomes flooded.
  • Construction site workers should store loose building material and tie down sheds.
  • Boat owners should securely moor their boats.
WEATHER DETAILS
As at 4.40pm on Monday 27 June the Bureau of Meteorology advises a cold front will bring dangerous gusts up to 125 kilometres per hour, higher than normal tides that may cause flooding in low-lying coastal areas, dangerous surf conditions that may cause beach erosion, and heavy rain that may cause flash flooding.

Damaging winds could result in significant damage and destruction to homes and property in localised areas.

The worst weather is expected near the Southwest Capes from 2am, extending to Bunbury by 6am and to Perth mid to late morning. The strongest winds are likely to be experienced in coastal suburbs and towns. Conditions will ease during the afternoon as the front moves further to the east and weakens.

This type of weather event occurs three or four times a year and could cause major damage to homes and make travel dangerous.

IF DRIVING DURING BAD WEATHER:
  • If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.
  • Take care in areas that have been flooded and do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
  • If you are in the country be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy, and vehicles could become bogged.
IMPORTANT NUMBERS:
  • If your home or property has been badly damaged by a storm call the SES on 132 500. SES volunteers respond on a priority basis and people are asked to remain patient.
  • In a life threatening situation call 000.
  • For the latest weather information visit www.bom.gov.au or call1300 659 213.

Fingers & Toes crossed!
