Potato Head ... Shall be on my list at places to be seen in Bali.

Red Carpet in Seminyak is a nice hangout as well. Also put Wah Wah in your list for kick ass martinis and waygu sliders.

Bali is what you make of it. Hang out in Kuta/Legian you get the masses of drunk tourists and the associated BS. M'D and I were together during my only bad experience in Bali as someone tried to rip me off. We were was walking a lane back from Kuta Beach. Excepting the above I have always had good experiences in Bali but I stay out of Kuta for the most part.

In the end everywhere has its issues. Everyone told me Zim wasn't safe - never had a problem. SA is safer but I hated the obvious tension and overtly armed security but wouldn't swap my days in Soweto for anything.

If your aim is to be at a resort, at the pool bar, eating the westernised restaurant food then in the end you could be anywhere as they'll all look and be priced the same.

If your going to travel and have concerns booking "different" accommodations try Tripadvisor online to get recent reviews by travellers of various accommodations. I find it extremely useful.
