My g/f has a '06 TDI golf with 6spd DSG. I am really impressed with how it drives and the general build quality of it. Tad more expensive to service (not sure on exact figures) but as with anything, quality costs more.

Getting 1,100km's/tank of diesel is certainly a plus. Recently did a trip from the city to Margs and back, used just over half a tank of diesel on the whole trip.

The Polo 77TSI might be worth considering? I picked mine up a few months ago and it is quite a good car for the price.

G/f test drove the new Polo, found it had a fairly small interior compared to the Golf which she ended up getting.

Good car otherwise.

I have an 08 Golf GT Sport TDI with DSG - absolutely fantastic car. Servicing is marginally more expensive than other similar sized cars, but value for money can't be beaten on the Golf range in general.

Comfort, fuel economy (1000+ km on country runs, 700km city driving to 50 litres), performance (twin charged is zippy) and versatility are all standouts for a car of its size. Internal space is phenomenal for a hatchback.

We also just bought my mrs a base model MY11 Golf. It's a great little car and worth every cent.
