Default Modem/Router help

I have 2 modem/routers. I am trying to set it up so, 1 modem/router has the phone line coming into it, and thus connects to my ADSL account.

The 2nd modem/router I want to connect more PC's to it in such a way that all PC's on both routers can see each other, and, all computers can access the internet connection. So far my attempts have failed.

I have 1 CAT5 cable connecting the 2 routers.

Anyone be able to help out or give some tips?

Cheers!

You're probably better off buying or grabbing off a nerd friend a small d-link or similar switch or hub to plug into the modem.

It can be done with 2 routers, but you'd need to disable DHCP on the second router and I'm not sure that would be the end of it either. A simple "stupid" switch/hub will present no configuration challenges.

I didnt particularly want to spend money where I didn't have to, and I had a spare router sitting here.

I did disable the DHCP server on the 2nd router...

Turn DHCP Off, assign a static IP on the "PC" Router that is on the same subnet as your
"ADSL" router and that should be all you need to do.

I have 3 ADSL routers hanging off of my home network as I had them spare and also didn't want to spend unnecessary money. This is all I did to make them work.

So long as the 2 modem/routers are connected together and there is a successfull link between the two, and the only DHCP server running is the one which actually has the ADSL/PPP terminating on it, you should be fine.

There is no real need to buy a switch or anything additional for what you are trying to do.

Also depnding on the models of each modem/router you are using, you may wish to ensure both are in the same subnet. Eg, Modem1 (ADSL) 10.1.1.1/24, Modem2 10.1.1.2/24, then set your DHCP scope on Modem1 to 10.1.1.10-50/24
