Wind resistance will slow him as he enters the thicker layers of the atmosphere.

Denser air will slow him down considerably that why if they do hit the speed of sound it will have to be in the first min or so.

EDIT:
The commentator just beat me to it if your still listening to the feed. But he needs to slow to less than 172 mph before he can open his main chute, if he doesn't a reserve chute will open automatically

He'll hit the speed of sound within the first 40 seconds.
