Default Hard Drive data retrieval

Does anybody know of a data retrieval specialist for hard drives?

The information I have been provided is that the actuator arms have failed and need to be replaced. I'm aware that this is usually a throw away moment but the drive has all his photos on it.

I'm aware that this sort of repair / retrieval would be expensive but that would not be a concern.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Find the same model HDD somewhere, (type serial number into ebay etc) get same model, take it apart carefully and change the arms?

Will be a delicate job as you will need to pull the platters out too, but at least if you practice on the one you buy you can be prepared for the one you are repairing.

If it's a really old HDD, obviously will be harder to get a spare unfortunately.

Or, if the arms are too hard, change the PCB and platters over into the one which is working.

I've got about 6 broken drives here if you want more practice ...

I had Smerm07 (Matt) do mine for me. I'd try and PM him. He is my "go to" guy for IT and has never let me down!

That's what I figured needed to be done Rich. Certainly not a job for me with my fat fingers nor my mate.

Can you recommend anyone who has a clean room and does this sort of work?

Have you use them? The cost above wouldn't be a concern.

The drive will be coming back from OS early next week. I've asked for a photo of drive to obtain equivalent drive for repair parts.

How did you find out that it's the arms that failed?

From my mate over the phone. He's got some good IT support over there but not in this area. He did mention part of his issue is part availability due to the floods which took out the HD manufacturing factories.

He's only got a couple of weeks back in AUS and wanted to ensure he gets his photos back. I believe he's had a few major losses of late including a music collection that made my 700Gb look small.

He's got a very large RAID with 2 drive redundacy now (thankfully). I'd assume this HD fail occurred when he was transferring photos to it.

spectrum data in Bentley is who we use as our 'last resort' for recoveries, the last disk we had recovered was flown to the US, the cost was $2,827 including GST, with all data returned on another hard drive.
