Iphone 4 Hotspot security issue
Figure there's prob a few tech experts on board here who might be able to answer a question that google cant.
Been using the hotspot on Iphone 4 at home with the laptop. Set it up with a password to restrict access but keep getting a second connection pop up after a while. Tried switiching off hotspot and reactivating with new password. My laptop hasn't been prompted to enter new password and connects straight away, and again second connection joins on. What am I missing to secire the connection? I can tether it of course but shitting me we can't leave the hotspot open for our own devices. Any thoughts or assistance appreciated. Cheers, P

If you have the phone plugged into the laptop, and you are tethering using WIFI at the same time, it comes up with 2 connections.
Not sure if this is what is happening? |

I think the first connection is the phone connecting to itself (e.g. using the wireless) and the second connection is the laptop connecting to it.
I know my phone (Android) does this as well as my iiNet/Optus 4g access point.

Using the inbuilt hotspot function on the phone, or connecting the phone to the laptop via cable/bluetooth and then sharing the internetz?
If you use the inbuilt hotspot it uses WPA2, so your neighbour shouldn't be able to crack it causing the 2 connections. I only ever have 1 connection showing on the phone if I connect another wifi item to the phone that way. I'd try rebooting the phone, ensure that hotspot is OFF, changing the ID of the phone (i.e. instead of 'Pauls iPhone' call it 'Stop Stealing my net farken'), then change the password for the hotspot function and finally turn it back on. If thing automagically connect without the new ID and password, switch it off and book an appointment with an Apple Genius at one of their stores as something is very wrong. I don't bother with the actual tether with a cable or bluetooth so know sfa about that.

Thanks Rich but I only tethered it last night for first time to try and elimiate the second connection and switched off wifi.
I think you might be onto something Sok as I've got a feeling somehow the second connection is being generated by one of our own sources. Main concern is third party tapping our connection and piggy backing it. Will have to see if maybe laptop is connecting on bluetooth as well as wifi or similar I guess. Keep on trying to figure it out.
